Get Hooked on New Brunswick's Handmade Heritage... and help us tell our story (pdf)

For more than 200 years, the hands of loving New Brunswickers have recorded scenes of home, family, nature, and the sea, converting found materials into hooked mats. These homemade treasures, hooked by mothers and grandmothers to warm their floors, are a priceless part of our heritage.

To safeguard that heritage we have created the New Brunswick Mat Registry, a volunteer group working in partnership with the New Brunswick Museum. Its mission is to document hooked mats and the heart-warming stories behind them. When completed, it will be an Interactive Virtual Exhibit, complete with images, stories and videos, that will make this legacy available to all.

Already, more than 450 mats have been registered. Many more remain to be recorded and all must be integrated into the online resource. And that is a costly process, requiring professional content development, photography, videography, graphic design, development of learning modules, website development, and translation of all exhibit materials into both official languages.
